Dental Implants

In many cases dental implants are now the best way to replace missing teeth. Dr. Brosnan has completed advanced training in implant dentistry and was recently honored as a fellow by The International Congress of Oral Implantologists (December, 2015). At Brosnan Dental your implants will be placed and restored by our experienced team in one location, and our entire staff will work with you to make the process comfortable and successful.

What Are Dental Implants? Dental implants are used to support the restorations used to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. They are usually made of titanium and act to replace the roots of missing teeth. Once the implant has healed to the bone, they can support a crown, bridge or denture to replace the missing tooth or teeth.

What Are The Benefits? There are many benefits of dental implants compared to other restorative options. Implant placement helps to:

  • Prevent adjacent teeth from unnecessary treatment

  • Preserve bone and soft tissue from being lost

  • Improve appearance by replacing missing teeth

  • Improve dental hygiene

  • Provide stability for dentures

  • Prevent surrounding teeth from shifting and bite collapse

What Does The Treatment Involve? The first step in the implant process is a consultation appointment to determine if you would be a good candidate for treatment. Next, the implants are placed and allowed to heal for a period of usually 3 to 4 months. Once healing has been completed, the missing teeth can be restored with permanent crowns, or the implants can stabilize an existing denture.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth may become further infected.

A tooth’s nerve is not vitally important to a tooth’s health — its only function is sensory — to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth. The ADA provides the following information on Root Canal Proceedures. For more information visit www.ADA.org.

What is root canal treatment?
Your dentist uses root canal treatment to find the cause and then treat problems of the tooth’s soft core (the dental pulp). Years ago, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were removed. Today, root canal treatment has given dentists a safe way of saving teeth.

What is the dental pulp?
The pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. It lies within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws.

What happens if the pulp gets injured?
An abscessed (infected) tooth is caused by tooth decay. When the pulp is diseased or injured and can’t repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let germs (bacteria) enter the pulp. Germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a “pus-pocket” called an abscess. An abscess can cause damage to the bone around the teeth.

Why does the pulp need to be removed?
When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result. Certain byproducts of the infection can injure your jaw bones. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed.

What does treatment involve?
Treatment often involves from one to three visits. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems of the pulp) removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.

How long will the restored tooth last?
Your restored tooth could last a lifetime, if you continue to care for your teeth and gums. However, regular checkups are necessary. As long as the root(s) of a treated tooth are nourished by the tissues around it, your tooth will remain healthy.

Make a Clear Choice For a Better Smilesvc-invisalign-323

Brosnan Dental provides Invisalign, a revolutionary way to help our patients get straighter teeth without conventional metal braces. Your consultation appointment is completely free.

What Is It?
Invisalign is an attractive alternative to metal braces, and uses a series of nearly undetectable aligners instead of brackets and wires.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Clear – the aligners are virtually invisible so others can’t tell you’re straightening your teeth

  • Comfortable – no metal wires and brackets

  • Effective – even before your treatment is finished, your teeth alignment will improve

  • Removable – eating, brushing and flossing are not a problem. You can still enjoy your favorite foods without holding back

  • Customized – the doctor will take precise impressions of your teeth to create your aligners

What Is Involved?
Initial examination — you and your dentist will decide if Invisalign is right for you

First visit — we will write a treatment plan and take an impression of your teeth

Computer design — using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, we will use Invisalign software to carefully translate our impressions into a series of precisely customized aligners

Subsequent visits — you will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, moving your teeth gradually – week by week, millimeter by millimeter – until you’ve achieved the intended result: straighter teeth.

How Long Does It Take?
The Invisalign straightening process in some cases can take as few as 3 months.  Most cases take approximately 12 to 18 months (the same amount of time as traditional braces)  but with less frequent visits to the dental office.
